Jim & Joy Mitchell

Jim Mitchell was raised in Lexington, Ky., and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's in metallurgical engineering followed by an MBA. He spent his career at Alcoa, where he worked in quality assurance, production, product development and purchasing. During his time with the company, he lived in Maryville, Tenn.; Chillicothe, Ohio; Davenport, Iowa; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Lafayette, Ind.

When he retired, Jim started volunteering.

"After my first wife died of cancer, that motivated me to get involved," he said.

While in Indiana, he volunteered with several organizations, including Caregiver's Companion, a service that relieves relative caregivers weekly and transports needy patients to hospital and doctor appointments.

"Caregivers Companion in Lafayette was one of my favorites," said Mitchell. "They go in and relieve caregivers once a week so they can go out and enjoy shopping or whatever they want to do. I loved meeting some of the people and talking with them. It's just a fascinating job."

After Jim and his second wife, Joy, moved to Cookeville from Indiana, he began volunteering in the Cancer and Imaging Centers at Cookeville Regional. Joy helps at the hospital two days a week, as well as at the Cookeville Pregnancy Clinic, and plays the piano at nursing homes. Besides all the things they currently do to help others, Jim and Joy also believe in giving after they're gone.

"We've left some for our children and a larger amount to several charitable organizations," said Mitchell, who has included The Foundation's Cancer Care Fund in his will. "Both Joy and I believe in giving because we've been so blessed."

The Mitchells are members of First Baptist Church. Between them they have five children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
